Allergies - a natural approach

Allergies’ symptoms are an exaggerated reaction of the immune system and their therapy should be based in developing a stronger immunity so that the organism is able to adapt more easily to the surrounding environment.
Allergies are one of the health problems that have increased more since World War II, specially in developed countries, particularly in children.
The variety of modern allergies is impressive and there are people so sensitive that everyday factors can result in scary allergic crisis. As there is a connection between the mind and the body, I believe allergies don’t manifest themselves only in a physical shape but also through emotional phenomena: when we are extremely sensitive to environmental or dietary factors we become less able to cope with criticism, differences or people with different life styles.
The conventional approach to allergies is, generally, to avoid the allergenic substances in order to avoid the crisis. In some serious cases medication such as anti-histaminic or corticosteroids (cortisone) are used.
However, the no exposure policy to the substances that apparently cause the allergies, or the use of medication, don’t really solve the problem, it just avoids that the symptoms manifest more extremely.
We can consider that the allergic symptoms are an exaggerated reaction of the immune system and that their therapy should be done by strengthening a stronger immunity, to allow the organism to adapt more efficiently to the surrounding environment.
Among the factors that contribute the most to a worse immunity, I believe the most relevant are:
1.Modern diet- a diet with huge amounts of sugar, dairy products, refined foods, nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants), tropical foods, fast food, leads to a weaker immune system. The regular absence of foods that strengthen immunity as whole grains, vegetables, beans, also adds up to the problem.


2.Sedentary life- modern life was made so easy that we use an elevator to climb a flight of stairs, the car or the bus to go 400 meters and we seat on a desk for a whole day of work. Regular physical activity is essential for the lymphatic system to move and renew, and many of the allergies improve greatly when people start to become more physically active.


3.Environmental factors- the constant exposure to electromagnetic fields as those generated by cell phones, computers, televisions, copy machines, air conditioning, also tends to weaken the immune system. Although it is almost impossible to avoid these modern comforts, we should use them only when extremely necessary. It is also advised to have green plants in the house and in the office, that help to minimize the harmful effects of electric and electronic devices and to purify the air. Prefer natural materials for the house and clothes, as for example wood, cotton, paper, linen, etc., avoiding synthetic materials and fabrics.


4.The abusive use of medication - even though medication can save lives, the abusive and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, anesthetics, cortisone and drugs in general tend to weaken the immune system. Medication should only be used when really necessary and prescribed by a physician.
If you take into account the mentioned aspects, particularly those in which you have the power to choose- diet, physical activity, clothes’ fabrics, it is possible that the allergies improve greatly.


Rubbing the body with a moist and hot towel
Rubbing the body with a moist and hot towel, a method developed by Mishio Kushi, is an excellent treatment for allergies.  
By rubbing the body, blood circulation is enhanced and activated, lymphatic circulation is accelerated, skin pores open, helping the organism to get rid of toxins through the skin, and it also stimulates the energy meridians used in acupuncture.
  • Soak a cotton towel in really hot water or simply put it under the hot water tap. Wring it and rub the whole body until the skin turns pink (every time the towel turns cold soak it again in hot water), focusing on the fingers and toes.
  • Rub for 15 minutes in the morning and/or in the evening. Not only it helps the immune system, but it also helps to increase vitality and, if performed before sleeping, to sleep better.


Sweet vegetable stock
 Allergies are frequently connected to hypoglycemia (low sugar levels) or to unstable sugar levels. If you suffer from allergies try to drink every day or frequently a cup of this stock.
  • ½ a cup of chopped carrots
  • ½ a cup of chopped onions
  • ½ a cup of chopped savoy cabbage 
  •  ½ a cup of chopped pumpkin
  • 4 times the amount of water
  • Let the vegetables boil, low the heat to the minimum and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Strain and drink it.


Leafy green vegetables
Minerals are essential to strengthen the immune system and to treat allergies. Eat daily a good amount of leafy green vegetables as turnip branches, turnip greens, Portuguese cabbage, leek, etc., steamed.
